Why Dogs Eat Grass and How to Stop It
Since dogs are carnivores, they tend to eat grass most of the time, which is natural for them especially canine. Owners would be in shock if they don’t see dogs eating grass. Dogs treat anything as food especially plants and grass so the dogs treat this like a normal diet.
There’s no main reason why dogs eat grass. Researchers have tried to understand why the dogs like to eat grass. Some reasons suggest that:
- The grass contains vitamins, minerals and nutrients, which is part of dog’s diet.
- For sick dogs, they tend to chew it to make themselves throw up since the grass can cause the dog with upset stomach, which will end up getting irritated.
- The dog may feel hungry and end up eating the grass.
- The dogs like the taste. When the dog sniff on the grass, the smell will get the dog excited and will end up eating the grass.

Dogs like to eat anything they see for example food on the floor and in the garbage, dead animals, etc and this can be a problem for the dog because they will end up having upset stomach and by eating grass, it will make the dog vomit since the grass contains substances or chemicals that causes an upset stomach.
You can prevent the dog from eating grass by following these 4 steps.
- Set a pot of grass for your dog to eat by leaving it on the side in your garden or the balcony and let your dog eat from there. This is done by growing dog grass in a container and when it’s grown, you can let your dog eat it. By doing this, your dog will get use to eating grass from the container and not from anywhere else.
- If your dog tend to eat grass from somewhere else, use the command “Drop it” and say this in a firmly way. When the dog drops the grass, you can award and praise the dog with a treat. This way the dog will know what to do and will not make the same mistake again.
- Make sure your dog has got right amount of diet with plenty of protein and nutrients. The dog would probably eat the grass just to get right amount of nutrients. Give your dog plenty of green vegetables such as broccoli, peas, lettuce, etc to help your dog become healthy and this will prevent your dog from eating grass.
- If your dog is sick, take your dog to a local vet. This is vital since the dog might have worms or bacteria and the dog eats the grass just to throw up.
As this is natural for the dog to eat grass, you do not need to be worried at all. But you do need to make sure that the dog does not eat grass from anywhere else as it might contain toxic chemical such as fertilizers that could be dangerous and harmful to your dog and by following the four steps, you can prevent the dog from eating grass. If you come across mushrooms in your garden or taking your dog outside for a walk, make sure you keep your dog away from it since mushrooms can also be dangerous for the dog.
