Teach Dog Tricks with Patience
If you want the simplest technique to teach dog tricks, you need to work on the nature of your dog meaning looking at the tricks, which your dog already know for example your dog may know how to put paws on your knee or jumping, etc.
By selecting the trick, which your dog already knows, most of your work is completed. Your dog will react well when it comes to rewards by pleasing you and this builds the dog ability to learn the same trick better rather than learning a new trick.
Choosing Tricks for your dog
When choosing a trick for your dog, look for the dog’s behaviour. This could be anything such as jumping or crawling, etc and as the dog perform this natural trick, you can train him by using commands and hand movement.

After you do this, you can reward your dog and praise him. As you do this, your dog will get an idea to perform the same trick.
In the future, instead of your dog performing the trick by himself, you can use commands and hand gesture to perform the trick such as fetching an item. Once the trick is inside the dog’s head, you can develop on it for example if you were teaching your dog to catch a ball or a stick, you can increase the distance so your dog can catch from far range and teach your dog to drop it.
Teach dog popular tricks
The most popular tricks you can teach your dog are:
- Sit
- Rollover
- Fetch
- Jump
- Come
- Paws
The MOST popular dog tricks to teach your dog are sit and come. These tricks are very easy to teach. To teach your dog how to sit, press firmly on his hind quarters just above the back legs and at the same time use the command ‘Sit’ in a quiet way. Keep doing this until your dog sits and when he does, you can praise your dog and giving treats. Make sure you don’t do this to older dogs since they might have arthritis on their legs.
If your dog still does not sit, don’t get angry and yell at your dog. Keep repeating the process until he sits. If you shout at your dog or get angry at him, your dog will treat ‘Sit’ as being told off. If your dog still doesn’t sit, try teaching the dog another trick.
To teach your dog to come, say the command ‘Come here’ or ‘Come’ with a loud voice. You only do this only if your dog is at a distance as this grabs the dog’s attention. Do not say this in a shouting way as your dog will consider the command as being told off. Most dogs walk away if they are new to this training since they don’t know what to do and ignore you.
To prevent this from happening, you should walk up to the dog within 5 feet away and use the command ‘Come here’. Once you do this, the dog will eventually come to you and this will be a good time to reward and praise your dog. When you do this, your dog will get use to the process and will start coming to you when you say ‘Come’ or ‘Come here’ no matter how far your dog is.
Make sure you never yell at your dog if he doesn’t come to you since dogs feel frightened and walks away from you. You should always be patience and keep practising until the dog comes to you.
Another trick you can teach your dog is Paw. When you say ‘Paw’ the dog’s paw should be lifted. To do this you say the command ‘Paw’ and lift the paws up gently. When you do this, praise and reward the dog. If you do this regularly, your dog will eventually lift the paw and you can increase the training by lifting two paws, etc.
While teaching tricks to your dog, it should be fun and enjoyable so you and your dog will have a great time together.
