Teach Dog to Come

The Ultimate Dog Training GuideThe ‘Come’ command is a very important command to teach your dog and it’s a very difficult trick to learn but it should be the first trick to teach your dog. The aim of this trick is for your dog to come towards you when you say the command ‘Come’. If you say this command more than once, you need to train your dog even more until he knows what to do.

Before you teach your dog ‘Come’ command

When starting to teach dog to come, make sure you taught your dog the ‘Sit’ and “Stay” command. If your dog knows these commands use a light rope that is 20 or 30 feet long and attach it to your dog.

When you do fit a rope to your dog, make sure that it fits perfectly well. You only use the light rope for smaller dogs or puppy. If you have a big dog, use a larger rope. It is important to attach a rope to the dog as this can prevent him from running away by grabbing the rope. It can be a bad habit to grab the rope since it could harm the dog. The best approach is to step on the rope with your feet. This will prevent your dog from serious injury and running away.

You can train your dog anywhere that pleases you either in the house or outside but make sure that space is at least 50 feet wide where there’s a fence or a wall so your dog won’t run away. Make sure that you have your rope attached to the dog so that you got control over your dog.

Teach dog ‘Come’ command

To start training your dog to come, say the command ‘Sit’ and ‘Stay’ straight after. If your dog gets very excited and start jumping, say the command ‘Stay’ and at the same time move backwards slowly away from the dog. If however your dog is walking towards you, say the command ‘No’ and say this firmly. Once you said this, put him back to the same spot and repeat the process again by saying ‘Sit’ and ‘Stay’. If your dog sits and stay for few seconds, move back slowly about 10 feet away and say the command ‘Come’. If your dog ignores the command and starts to wonder somewhere else, say the same command again and this time pull the rope back as this will force the dog to come towards you. Try not to pull the rope very hard. Never say the command ‘No’ or ‘Bad dog’ as this shows a negative behavior. You must be patient and show a positive attitude so your dog will have fun training.

When the dog comes towards you, praise the dog by petting him and saying the command ‘Good boy’. This will help the dog perform correctly as dogs like being praised by owners. Remember you must praise the dog only if he comes towards you. If he doesn’t come towards you while you say the command ‘Come’, your dog will think this is what he meant to do in order to get a praise by walking away.

Once your dog fully understand the ‘Come’ command, you can develop the training further by making the dog run around while the rope is attach and saying the command ‘Come’ randomly. If your dog doesn’t come to you, pull the rope and again say the command ‘Come’. When the dog is towards you, praise the dog and repeat the process. When you do this make sure that you are calm and not holding the rope very hard and also make sure that your dog runs slightly slowly so that you can easy see him clearly if he’s trying to run off. If he does, step on the rope so that he can’t run too far.

While training your dog the ‘Come’ command, always remember to be patient with your dog and always repeat the process so that your dog will understand clearly what to do and make sure you show a positive attitude towards your dog as dogs can see owner’s body language and if the dog see you angry, he will get frightened and becomes afraid of you.
