- Take a hand full of your dog’s favourite treat such as chopped sausage, which are mostly dogs favourite.
- Get down on your knees so you are in level with your dog as this can make the dog more aware and feel less frightened of you.
- Slowly move your hands towards the dog so that the dog can smell the treat and when the dog sniff, try to follow the dog’s nose so the dog can either move away from you or still sit down, which is more likely he will do.
- Give your dog the sausage when he sits for few second and saying the command ‘Sit’. It is vital to treat your dog exactly the right time so the dog will know what to do when you say the command.

- Repeat the method again 3 to 5 times and making sure your still enjoying the training. If you feel you’re not excited anymore then stop for few hours and do the training again. You can repeat the training as many as you like in a day.
- If you succeed the training by getting down on your knees, try to teach the dog while standing up and using the command ‘Sit’ without using any treats and hand gesture. You need to find out if he’s listening to your command or he’s sitting down because you sitting down. If he sits down when saying the command, your training is complete and you can praise him. If he doesn’t sit down, train the dog again but DO NOT show any disappointment or frustration since the dog can see your body language. Try to make the training fun for you and your dog.
If you have a puppy, you can use the same method. It will be a lot easier to train a puppy as it will take at least 1 or 2 days for the puppy to sit. This training is important as the dog needs to relax by sitting after running or walking, etc.
Once your dog fully understands the command ‘Sit’, you should start building up the command so that the dog will sit in every situation. You need to continue this training and don’t stop. Try to use different situations such as sitting with other people, other dogs or in a new environment.
