Teach Dog Roll Over – A Trick for Teaching Your Dog to Roll Over

Dog and Puppy TrainingMost of the dogs like to play roll over, which you can teach your dog. Roll over simply makes the dog spin on the ground round and round again until the dog gets dizzy.

There are three steps to take when teaching dog roll over. The first step is to position the dog before rolling over. This step is important as some dogs will not understand what to do and will get confused and frustrated when jumping straight to step 2. When you done with step 1, step 2 comes into play, which is rolling your dog over. This step splits into smaller sections and once you finished this step, step 3 comes, which is repeating step 1 and 2 so your dog will know how to rollover when saying the command ‘Rollover’.

Let’s explain the steps even more.

1 Down

The first step, which you need to do is to make your dog lie down on the ground and to do this say the command ‘Down’. When you say this command, your dog front and back feet should be on the ground firmly but not completely on the ground. If your dog is having difficulty with this, assist the dog by gently pushing the lower part of the leg so your dog will stay down.

Once your dog is down, treat him with his favorite food to show that your dog has successfully stayed down.

2 Roll Over

Step 2 is the main step to teach dog dog roll over. This step is broken down into two tricks.

First make your dog lie completely flat on the ground by saying the command ‘Play dead”. This trick will make the dog pretened he is dead. Again assist your dog if he has difficulty lying down by putting slight pressure on the lower back. This will make the dog lie completely down with face flat on the floor.

Once your dog knows how to play dead, it is time to make your dog roll 360 from front to back. To do this hold both the dog’s legs, which is closer to the ground and turn the dog around so the dog’s back is on the ground and the legs are sticking up. After you done this say the command ‘Roll Over’ or ‘Roll’. Make sure that you use one of the commands so the dog will not get confused.

When the dug successfully rolled, instead of treating your dog with his favorite food, you can reward the dog by rubbing his stomach. You should do this every time he rolls over when you say the command ‘Roll Over’ so your dog will know he’s doing it correctly.

3 Repeat the process

This final step is about repeating the process again. It is important to repeat the process so your dog will get used to the command and the action he needs to take. You should repeat the process 2 or 3 times so your dog will understand what to do. When your dog turns properly on one side, you can teach your dog to turn on the other side and you should also repeat this and vary the time so that your dog spins faster than before but don’t increase to an extent where your dog feels too dizzy as this can make him feel sick.

Your dog may take a while to learn a new trick, which he never learnt before. By being patient and training your dog from 5 to 10 minutes, your dog will be able to pick the trick very easy and having less stress from you and your dog.
