Is your puppy giving you problems of chewing your things and shredding them up into little pieces? Don’t worry. You can stop puppy chewing by following these methods.

You MUST understand why your puppy likes to chew

The first thing you need to know is why your puppy likes to chew. Here are some of the reasons:

  • Health problems - Does your puppy chew and eat non-food items more than he eats food? If he does, it is very likely that your puppy got Pica. This condition causes your puppy to chew on objects to deal with nausea.
  • Teething - When puppies are teething, they tend to chew on hard items, which release the endorphins. These chemicals help your puppy feel calm by making their sore gums better.
  • Learn about their environment - Puppies are no different than human babies. Babies chew on things to learn about their environment just like puppies. Puppies chew on whatever they see such as shoes, wallet, remote, etc. As this is normal to a puppy, their chewing can be destructive.

Once you understand the problem, you can stop puppy chewing by following the methods below. If your puppy does have Pica, you must urgently take him to the VET.

Preventing puppy chewing

As an owner, you need teach your puppy on things he shouldn’t be chewing on. It is vital that you train your puppy as he won’t outgrow chewing.

Putting your things in a correct place

The very first thing you should do to stop puppy chewing  is by putting your items away. Don’t put the items any ware where he can easily get them. You should put small items such as glasses, remote, wallet, etc on the shelves, or in the draws that can be locked or harder to open. Other items such as shoes, socks or any other items, which your puppy likes to chew on, can be put away safely in the closet.

Spray your large items

You should make the items, which you can’t move such as table, carpet, etc, taste very bad to your puppy. This can be done with a spray such as Shaws Chew Deterrent or any other bitter tasting sprays, which you can purchase in a pet store. These sprays prevent your puppy from chewing destructive.

Give your puppy toys

You should give your puppy lots of toys at least two or three at a time as this helps the puppy to see that the toys belong to him and he can chew it as many times as he like. If he does chew on other things that don’t belong to him, use the command “Drop-it” and make a noise that will shock the puppy so that he will end up dropping the item. As soon as he drops the item on the floor, you should straight away give your puppy his toy and start praising him. This helps the puppy to understand what to do when you say the command “Drop-it” and things he should be chewing.

Exercise Your Puppy

Your puppy needs to have regular exercise at least two hours a day by taking your puppy out in the park to play and train him with basic commands. Puppies can easily lose concentration when training so spend at least 30 seconds working on these commands.

When you want your puppy to play by himself, always keep an eye out and if you are busy reading a newspaper or a book, etc, put a leash on him so that he can’t wonder off very far.

What you MUST NOT do with your puppy chewing behavior

Do not let your puppy chew old items

You should never give your puppy any old items that you wear or use such as old socks or old watch, etc. By giving him these items, your puppy will end up chewing on your new items because he doesn’t know the difference between old and new items. You must be very clear on the things he should and shouldn’t chew for example he should chew his toys but cannot chew your things.

Do not punish Your Puppy

Never punish your puppy if you see him chewing destructively on your items. He will not understand at all as to why he’s being punished. This will lead your puppy with anxiety and be frightened by you.

Do not leave your puppy outside

Never leave your puppy locked up outside as this will be difficult for the puppy to learn things and can take a lot of time and effort to train him. You should keep him beside you so that it is easier for him to learn what he should and shouldn’t do.

The best way to stop your puppy with excessive chewing is by spending quality time training on things he should and shouldn’t be chewing. It can be very easy to punish your puppy if he chews on your favorite or expensive things but by being patient and giving full training, you can stop your puppy chewing without showing any anger.
