Stop Dog Whining so Much
Regardless of what breed of dog you have, your pet will inevitably whine at some point. A dog’s whine can be quite melancholic. It’s often a signal of sadness. When it’s stuck indoors and you’re outside within earshot, it’ll whine to inform you it wants to get out. Dogs whine when they need personal attention and even when they’re excited! If you’re fed up with your whining dog, you can take a few measures that will curb your pet’s tendency to let out a long drawn out wail. Here are the steps to take to stop dog whining.
Pay Attention to Your Pet
Very often, your favorite pooch whines because it’s feeling neglected. Your dog requires plenty of affection and attention to develop into a lovable animal. Take your pet for walks and to explore the outdoors.

Pet your dog and tickle it affectionately, saying ‘GOOD DOG’. Run around with it in the park. Kick a ball with it or play fetch with a stick. Start a friendly game of tug-of-war with your pet using an old T shirt. You’ll notice that your dog thrives on the attention and much of it’s irritating whining would have ceased.
Teach Your Pet to Be Alone
When your dog is home alone for hours on end, it whines because it feels abandoned. The moment you reach for the door in the morning, your dog will begin whining. That’s a cue for you to prepare your dog for your long periods of absence in the weekdays. Take a sporadic series of long half-hour walks without your dog. Let it get used to the idea that you won’t be around. Increase the duration to an hour or more at a time. Watch what it does each time you return. Command your dog to ‘STAY’ when you go out the door so it does not attempt to follow you. Point to it’s cozy corner and order your dog to ‘GO’. Your dog will get the message and walk away towards its own corner instead of standing at the door and whining.
Stick to A Routine
Pick a specific time each day when you’ll take your dog out for exercise. Vary the route you take your dog but always take it out at the same time every day. A dog will know instinctively when it’s time for walking and will tug your sleeve to remind you. Knowing that it’ll be joining you for a fun time walking will reduce its prevalence to whining. Use the command ‘STOP’ each time it begins to whine and then give it a treat when it does so. Pet your dog and say ‘GOOD DOG’ to reinforce this good behavior. Your dog will learn that not whining brings added affection!
Don’t Encourage Whining
To effectively train your dog to stop whining, you mustn’t run to your pet each time it begins to wail. If you do this, you’ll encourage your dog to continue it’s whining sessions. Your behavior would indicate to your dog that it’s got control over you. Don’t be impressed with its whining and sad look. Firmly command it to ‘STOP’ and give your dog a hard stare. Your pet will learn that whining is not acceptable behavior.
Your dog will whine if it feels abandoned or needs personal attention. Dog obedience training requires patience and perseverance on your part. Train your dog to obey your commands of ‘STOP’ when it whines and pay sufficient attention to its need for companionship. You’ll soon stop your dog whining!
