How to Stop Dog Jumping on Me
You come through the front door and instantly your dog jumps on you, tail wagging. What makes your dog want to leap on you and almost knock you off your feet? He’s got pent-up energy that he releases like a spring when he pounces on you. It’s the dog manner of greeting you and also overexcited. Jumping helps a canine expend excess energy. If you’re keen to stop dog jumping on you, follow these steps to train your dog not to jump:
Step 1 – Teach Your Dog How to Sit
You have to make your dog understand that jumping is not acceptable behavior. Turn away from your dog when he jumps on you. Push out your hip towards him so that he’s blocked from landing on you.

Put your leg out to break his leap and prevent him from reaching you when he jumps. Command him to ‘STOP’ and say ‘OFF’ loudly and firmly. These actions indicate to your dog that you’re not pleased with him. When your pooch is not getting the desired response from you, he’ll actively want to know how to win back your affections.
When you’ve broken your dog’s leap and all his paws are on the ground, instruct your dog to sit. Repeat the command ‘SIT’ audibly. Press your dog’s rump firmly and repeat the word ‘SIT’. Keep repeating the command and gently but firmly show your dog exactly what you mean. When your pet finally does as it’s commanded, reward him with a doggie biscuit or bone. Compliment your dog with pats and affectionate handling as this can easily stop dog jumping on you.
Step 2 – Keep it Consistent
You must be consistent in your own actions if your dog is going to learn to stop jumping on you. Training your dog to be obedient to your commands of ‘SIT’ and ‘STOP’ requires everyone in your household to follow the same training program. Remind your family that it’s everyone’s duty to train the family pet properly. Don’t encourage undesirable behavior in your dog. Always say ‘STOP’ and ‘OFF’ when your dog attempts to leap on you. Use your ‘SIT’ command. You can transform your unruly pet into an obedient dog with consistency in your training regime.
Step 3 – Ignore Your Dog
If you try to push away your dog as he pounces on you, your pet will think you like his actions and continue to jump about. Don’t handle your dog roughly if the dog somehow manages to land on you. Your dog will assume that you are playing with him and become even more boisterous. Turn away from him. Ignore him completely. Stay quiet when you step through the front door for at least a quarter of an hour. Ignoring your dog gives him the signal that you’re not happy with him. Repeat the command ‘STAY’. He’ll begin to calm down and gradually stop being excitable.
Step 4 – Praise The Dog
Praising your dog is the best way to show that you accept his actions. Always reinforce your pet’s good behavior with praise. Sound out the words ‘GOOD BOY’ or ‘GOOD GIRL’ and affectionately pet your pooch. Give your pet treats. Snuggle up to your pet as a form of praise. Throw your dog a bone whilst saying ‘GOOD DOG’ and smiling each time your pet does as it’s commanded.
By following these 4 steps assiduously, you would have trained to stop dog jumping on you. With consistent training, your favorite pet will halt its undesirable actions and follow your commands to the letter. Before long, you’ll have a very obedient dog that does what it’s told and doesn’t pounce on you!
