Why do dogs jump on furniture? Most dogs tend to jump on furniture because they find it comfortable to relax on whether it is a couch, bad, etc.  If you have a dog who is 5 or 6 months old, you should not let your dog jump on the furniture at all this is because when the dog grows up, it will be easier for the dog to know where to and where not to jump.

Your dog also needs to know that you are the owner and that he must obey your commands. If you let your dog run jump around freely in the house, he will think to himself that he’s the boss and will end up ignoring you and just continue to jump.

Here are the rules that you should use to stop your dog from jumping on the furniture.

Consistent

You must be consistent with your dog by making a choice whether to make your dog jump on the furniture or not and you must stick to that choice always. For example if your dog jumps on the bed, you or any other people need to be consistent and not let him jump on the bed at all.  If you sometimes allow your dog to jump on the furniture and other times you don’t want him to jump, your dog will get extremely confused.

If your dog does jump on your furniture, firmly say the command ‘OFF’. You should always stick to this command and show the dog that jumping on the furniture is not right by using body language. This helps the dog to understand the command over time. A lot of dogs get excited about hearing the command ‘Off’ and will continue to jump. If your dog is one of them, follow the steps below.

  1. Buy a bed or make a bed for your dog using pillows and towels.
  2. Use the command ‘OFF’. This time look and point at the bed and at the same time keep eye contact with your dog. Try not to repeat the command over again. Saying it once is more than enough.
  3. Wait for 30 seconds. If he goes to his bed, immediately pet and praise the dog with treats and lots of cuddling. If he still doesn’t go to his bed, use slight physical encouragement as this helps the dog to obey you but do not get angry and force your dog as this can lead to anxiety.

Encourage the dog ‘OFF’ command

Most owners tend to stop the dog from jumping on furnitures by pulling the dog down with the collar. This is not a right way to stop dog jumping as this shows your aggression and physical power.

You should let your dog stop jumping in his own steam so he will find it really uncomfortable when jumping on the bed or the couch. To do this, gently slide your hand with palm down, under his backside. After you done this, slowly push him until he’s off the couch or the bed. This technique doesn’t force your dog to get off from the couch or the bed, it just makes the dog feel discomfort and will move away.

By following these techniques, you will help the dog to stop jumping on any of your furniture in his own terms, which is very effective than forcing him to stop jumping by pulling his collar. Also you can finally have a relax time with your dog.
