Stop Dog Biting Me
Why does your dog bite at you? That’s a question often asked by many owners of dogs who are tired of the dog nips they get. Play biting is a common reason for dogs to bite their owners. Your dog will indulge in playful biting when it’s playing with you. Play bites can still hurt! So how do you go about stopping your dog from play biting at you? You can follow these strategies for effective results:
Tap the Snout
A boisterous puppy often likes to sink its teeth into you when it’s playing. It’s part of the canine development stage. You may get annoyed with frequent pup nips and you’ll be tempted to push away your pet.

That may actually give it the impression that you condone the biting and it’ll continue nipping at you. Your puppy will think that you’re playing with it too. Even a larger dog will playfully bite you when it wants to engage in a play session. You can halt the biting by sounding out the command ‘STOP!’ very firmly in a harsh tone. Tap your pet on its snout and repeat the word ‘STOP’ when it attempts to bite you. Look at your dog in the eye and say ‘BAD DOG’ whilst tapping the snout again with a stern look. Your dog will learn that biting is not acceptable behavior.
Give Your Dog a Toy
When your dog is play biting you, repeat the word ‘NO’ and ‘STOP!’. Then grab a canine toy and thrust it towards your dog’s mouth to indicate that it should bite the toy instead of you. Divert its attention from you with rubber chew bones and other canine toys. Do this whenever your dog targets your flesh for a bite. When you quickly replace the targeted area with a chew toy, your dog will eventually get the idea that it shouldn’t bite you. It will then play with you minus the bites. Always keep the dog’s chew toys handy so you can use it at anytime.
Stop Biting Games
One of the best ways to stop your dog from biting you is to cease playing games where it chases you. When you’re being chased, your dog assumes that you’re a prey and it’s the predator. Your dog will nip and bite you when it catches up with you as part of the play strategy. Although chasing games are exciting, however you have to halt them immediately if you’re keen on stopping your dog biting at you. You should also cease tug-of-war games where you pit your strength against your dog by pulling at an old T-shirt between you both. Your dog will think that you’re its equal and nip at your hands to make you lose your grip. Instead of chasing and tug-of-war, try fetch and retrieval games. Throw a Frisbee and set your dog to fetch it with the command ‘FETCH’. Alternate with a stick or even a toy.
A playful dog will like to bite you especially when it’s been encouraged to do so through games. You can adopt a few effective strategies to stop your dog from biting at you by tapping its snout and diverting its attention with a chew toy, using suitable commands. Playing fetch and retrieval games with appropriate commands are excellent. Before long, your dog will learn not to bite you!
